Race Summary

Max Verstappen made history at the 2025 Italian Grand Prix by winning the fastest race in Formula One history with an average speed of 250.706 km/h. Starting from pole position with the fastest lap ever recorded in the sport, Verstappen briefly lost the lead to Lando Norris at the start but reclaimed it on lap 4 after obeying a team order to cede the position initially to avoid a penalty. The Red Bull driver controlled the pace from there, eventually finishing over 19 seconds clear of the field.

The battle behind the leader was defined by internal McLaren dynamics and significant records. While Oscar Piastri held second for much of the middle stint, the team instructed him to allow the faster Norris through on lap 49 to maximize Norris’s championship points. Norris then punctuated the performance by setting a new world record for the fastest race lap on the very last tour of the Monza Circuit, averaging 257.781 km/h.

Further down the order, the race featured intense wheel-to-wheel action and strategic recoveries. Lewis Hamilton delighted the Italian crowd by gaining four positions to finish sixth, while Alexander Albon secured a strong seventh-place finish for Williams. Despite the 1-2 finish for the papaya cars, Oscar Piastri left Italy with a 31-point lead over Norris in the Drivers’ Championship, as the season moves toward the final flyaway rounds.
